Road Rage.. YOU BET YOUR ASS!!!
In this day and age of civil rights infringements, corrupt cops and corrupt politicians is it any wonder people are angry?
Yesterday, on my home from work, I was pacing a cop who was travelling his/her usual 90mph "what laws?" speed up the road. I saw the cop pull up behind somebody in the fast lane and tailgate them for several thousand yards before pulling over into the slow lane and passing them on the right to continue on their high speed drive home. The few, the special, the cops.
I was driving to work this morning when I came upon a person driving a green chevy pickup hanging out in the fast lane going slow. I waited behind them for a bit before beginning the routine of hinting to them that they should get over in the right lane. You know, flash your lights to pass. This is a perfectly acceptable form of communication that everybody in the states seems to think is a form of attack on their personal.. well.. delicate feelings. Anyways, he wasn't getting the hint. So the next step is to get close and see if they'll pull over into the other lane. No go. They still didn't get it. They chose to be selfish and hog up the fast lane and allow nobody passage. It's their right you know. You can't cut in line in this country and get away with it. Everybody must comply and be docile and orderly and not show any enthusiasm for anything lest you think that you are special. Everybody knows the only special people are cops. So anyways, I proceeded to pass this asshat on the right, as much as I hated to do so.
Well, this asshat took it as a personal attack on their delicate emotions and a few seconds after I passed turned on their high beams. After that they floored it and proceeded to suck me up fast. I was going 80 they must've wicked it up to about 90 or so in attempt to.. hmm I have no idea what they were attempting to do. Scare me? Oh Please. I have to admit, it did get a bit of a rise out of me. Me and my humble Subaru were actually a threat to this asshat? What an ego booster. Of course, several questions immediately pop into my mind.. where was this burst of speed when the asshat was plugging up the fast lane? Apparently they were just being an asshole when they were hanging out in the fast lane. They obviously were capable of higher velocities. Who knows? Anyways, some twisties were coming up and I figured it was time to ditch this asshole who was on my ass with his high beams on. I actually thought about pulling over to the side of the road as the communist state would have you do, but then I thought to myself, I'm an unarmed individual and this asshole obviously has something to prove. With my luck, I'd end up getting my ass whooped. So, no thanks commie bastards, I'll take the safest way out and not sacrifice myself to the whims of the bullies of this world.. including your sorry asses. I had weighed my options and chose flight as the best alternative to getting plowed into by some asshole that has no concept of mass, inertia and braking distance. I was kind of hoping the asshat would follow me into the twisties at a high rate of speed so I could see the spectacular handling of his mean green chevy machine. But as I cranked it up to 90 for a beautiful ever so slight four wheel drift through the twisty section he came to his senses and backed off.
I wish I had his tag number. It was a green Chevy with dual exhaust. I'm not sure the year, but I'm thinking early 80s. It had a #8 nascar license tag, I'm thinking WV. It had a huge rebel flag in the rear window. I wonder if this asshat even knows the real meaning of the rebel flag and what it stands for as far as anti-federalism vs federalism.. probably not. He's probably all for the Iraqi invasion which would mean he doesn't have a clue flying the rebel flag. I'm not angry that the idiot in the truck was driving the way he was, I'm angry because he would've gotten away with driving slow in the fast lane while I would'be been punished for driving fast. I'm angry because he would've gotten away with tailgating while I would've been punished for driving fast. I'm angry that the cops punish us for things that aren't wrong. We should all be allowed to drive as we see fit. Even the cops. It's the unfairness of the situation that makes me angry. I think it is what makes most people angry, they just don't understand it.
Road Rage, You bet your ass. With idiots like the green chevy driver and cops that think they are above the law because they are the law, then what do you expect? If a cop will give you a ticket for speeding, even though you aren't hurting anybody, but won't give a guy a ticket for hogging up the fast lane, then why shouldn't you be angry? If the cops can get away with going 90+ up the road when you have to plod along at 65, then why shouldn't you be angry? It's a childs world and the adults are playing like children. They create special rules and conditions that they think are fair. However, it seems that everybodies sense of fair makes them come out on top. Many cops seem to view their exemption from the law as a benefit of the job, much like a baker gets leftover bread for free. Well, it's completely different. The baker buys the materials to make the bread. He's still paying for his "benefit". The cop does not buy nor own the law. If he's willing to punish somebody for something he gets away with, that makes him a tyrant, no matter how you slice it. If you are a cop, and your conscience bothers you, it should. Good for you. You are one step closer to the truth. If it doesn't bother you, then may your diety have mercy on your soul.
There's a reason to be angry. The government wants you to be docile and at peace. They want you to be calm and collected. They want to stigmatize anger so that they won't be the target of somebodies aggression. If somebody is angry, it isn't necessarily for the right reason, but it isn't always for the wrong reason. There's always going to be idiots out there driving. As long as I have the freedom to drive how I like to avoid them, then I'll be at peace. But since I'm constantly being reminded how unfair the law is, it makes me angry. As long as I'm angry, I'm going to be angry while I drive. If that's road rage, then there's your reason. I'm going to continue to drive defensively, I won't actively try and piss people off. But I may drive fast to stay on top of the situation. If you label me as wreckless, then you're wrong. If that's the case, then all the cops out there are wreckless.
I'm angry, but it's for the right reason.

Our Chief Peg Monkey has hit
Our Chief Peg Monkey has hit on one of the things that really (TRULY!!!) has me reacting badly (by some standards)while driving.
Now, you have to realize, I try to be a decent, honest, caring person.... yeah...I do .
BUT.....when someone's tailgating me and/or using high beams (coming at me or driving behind me), I r-e-a-l-l-y don't like it ... and would be willing to guess most folk out there react the same.
Tailgating during the day usually produces :
1) my reaching slighly and turning on the headlights (thus lighting the rear lights), then turning them off a couple seconds later. And, yes, I drive cars w/o headlights on all day long. What can you say for a 17 yr. old Dodge Omni (that's been "totaled" either 2 or 3 times) and a PT Cruiser ? :)
or
2)I hit the brakes (this does dual duty at night)...usually h-a-r-d. Yes, I do know the person (s) behind me could plow into me ... but every time I've done it, they seem to suddenly get a foot cramp type thing which must be very painful, as they release some pressure on the accelerator. Amazing .... truly.
Besides which, the one and only time I was "plowed into" was when I was sitting stock still waiting for the car in front of mine to have the opportunity to make a left hand turn. Never know, do ya .... ?
The slow driver in the fast lane is another whole topic ... and almost as irritating as the first. I suppose what bothers me the most is the total lack of just plain courtesy that's involved. After that, there follows the fact that they can cause the I'd-like-to-go-faster folk to get antsy and (in all probability) do something foolish/dangerous.
Our Chief's a defensive driver and handled his problem ... but how would that work in a 17 yr. old Omni or a PT (tho' it does handle quite well !!!) driven by this 63 yr old grandmother of 12 ???!!!!!!! :(
The issue of pulling over for "safety sake" is almost an oxymoron.... especially after dark.
Wouldn't it be nice if there were an easily implimented answer to all this ???? ........... Oh !!!! Silly me ....... I forgot ........we're dealing with humans here.
Hummmmmmmmmmmm, must be past my bed time ... me thinks I am ranting..............................................
